Sprint WiMax officially hitting San Francisco Bay Area December 28

Sprint has lit up a good chunk of the country with WiMax, so it seems like the huge tech hub that is the San Francisco Bay Area is well behind when it comes to the official launch of the 4G network. But in a few days, that will all change. While a great deal of the region already has WiMax coverage, it’s still a little spotty and weak. However, that may change once the official launch kicks off.

San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose and Silicon Valley should be getting a bit of the Sprint 4G love already, but if not then expect to see it on December 28 when it goes live. Expect some pretty good things–so far New York City and Los Angeles have been treated with some decent coverage. In my area of NYC, i’ll see anywhere between 4-6Mbps down with spikes of 9Mbps here and there.

If you’ve been sporting a USB modem that has 4G capabilities, that should be good to go as well. The same goes for those of you with the Overdrive 3G/4G mobile hotspot. If you’re living in the Bay Area and you’ve been eyeing an HTC EVO 4G or Epic 4G, now would be the time to grab one!
