Will someone please sit down with me over a cup of coffee and explain the latest craze that’s sweeping smartphone photography addicts? It seems that applications like Instagram and Camera+ are taking off because people like to intentionally make their photos look old and tarnished. Years of advances in CMOS technology, image processing, and component miniaturization, are rendered useless by people who think old is the new awesome. It’s only getting worse with the introduction of “8mm Vintage Camera” by Nexvio [iTunes link], who charges $2 for their iPhone app that makes your videos look like something out of the age of prohibition. Check out the sample below to see what I’m talking about.
Advanced color correction? Nope, you’re not going to find that here. Instead you’ll get scratches, grain, overexposed video that show “errors” with frame rates, all in the name of art. I’m not one to judge what is and isn’t tasteful. If it were up to me I’d live in a studio apartment with hardwood floors and have all my furniture carved out of oak, but come on people, do you really want to turn your memories into washed out clips that are difficult to decipher?
If this was free I’d say go ahead, try it out, but it isn’t. You’re paying $2, money that could be put to better use on a double espresso at the cafe around the corner, or that little extra you need to buy organic milk the next time you’re at the supermarket versus the typical hormone laced liquid that pretends to be healthy. If you do try it out, leave a comment below with a link to your video. Curious to see what, if anything, good comes out of this. For kicks, why not record a metal concert or a rave using this app?
