Why Sony Ericsson decided to make the Xperia arc name in lower case letters, I’ll never know. What I do know, however, is that the Android 2.3 Gingerbread handset is now available for pre-order in the UK. That’s right – Sony Ericsson is delivering on its promise that the smartphone will be available some time during Q1 2011.
When we first caught a glimpse of the Xperia arc at CES 2011, we came away pretty impressed. Sony Ericsson’s first Android handset, the Xperia X10, was a bulky and slow beast by comparison. The Xperia arc is thin, snappy and seems light years ahead of what SE was pumping out last year. The only thing that might be a deal-breaker for some of you is the UX interface that SE overlayed on top of Android 2.3 Gingerbread. At the very least, it will be launching with the latest and greatest Android version whereas the X10 launched with an antiquated version of the OS at a time when most people no longer cared for it.
The pre-order will set you back £459.99 if you’re a UK resident, but that will get you an Xperia arc without a SIM card and totally unlocked for your carrier of choice. Not a bad deal for a sweet Android handset and all that freedom.
