Nokia is teaming-up with two of China’s leading ISPs, SINA and Tencent, to integrate Ovi Maps into local social networks during Q1 2011. As a result, users of the two ISPs will be able to share their location information with friends and online communities. Moreover, Chinese Nokia phone users that also use SINA’s Twitter-like service Weibo or Tencent’s online community QQ will be able to check-in to locations and upload related content like recommendations and comments of various Points Of Interest (POI) such as restaurants, shops and movie theatres.
There are over 250 million Nokia phone owners in China and the Finnish company obviously wants to make some post-sales revenues out of them.
The two Chinese ISPs provide Nokia with instant access to millions of Internet users. For instance, SINA’s Weibo was only launched in August 2009 but is on track to hit 100 million users by the second quarter of 2011.
