Mobile payment solutions provider CHARGE Anywhere, which we’ve already covered for few times in the past, is teaming-up with GPAY Africa to launch mobile payments platform in Nigeria. Before we proceed with the news, you should know that GPAY Africa doesn’t have anything to do with Google’s rumored mobile payment service — or at least we’re not aware of any relations between the two companies.
Since there are quite a few people in Africa that are considered “unbanked” or “underbanked,” various mobile service providers are trying to get them to join the modern financial system. That said we’re seeing quite a few different mobile financial services being rolled-out across the continent.
The pilot project, developed by CHARGE Anywhere and GPAY Africa, will demonstrate prepaid utility bill applications, and will be able to run on mobile phones and GPRS wireless POS terminals processing and recording payments for traditional Bank/ATM card and cash transactions. This phase will conclude in 2011, followed by full launch and installation in the same year. We’re looking forward to get the first numbers and get back to you with them…
