Winamp itself reminds me of the early 90’s, as I used it as my primary player for a long time. When I saw that an application for Android was available, I was a bit skeptical. The beta player was interesting enough, but lacked some serious features. That’s all changed now, as Winamp has now received an update to version 1.0, and brings some awesome features along with it.
The update to Winamp brings ShoutCast stations, streaming music, and downloads to the table, as well as a simple redesign to make it easier on the eyes. That said, Winamp never looked ugly, but options are displayed in a cleaner layout. Another great new feature is that music player is now compatible with Google’s Voice Search Actions, allowing you to play music just by saying, “listen to (insert song here)”. The feature works wonderfully, and it’s great to see someone take advantage of what Google has provided.
Overall, Winamp is fast, looks nice, and integrates itself into Android unlike any media player we’ve ever seen. It’s nice when you can tell that the developers behind an application have really put a lot of effort into their work, and Winamp is one of the best examples we’ve seen. This will easily replace the stock Android Music application, though if you’re running the leaked Honeycomb music player, it may be a bit hard to part with. Still, you’ll get one of the most powerful music players available on the Android Market by doing so.
The small redesign of the application works well, but I’d really like to see some desktop features available for the Android app. One of my favorite things about using the Winamp desktop program was the option to skin the player itself. If Nullsoft opens the doors for third-party skins to be made on Winamp for Android, it would make it the one of the most functional, sexy music players available for the OS, hands-down.
You can grab Winamp from the Android Market here.
