Verizon has kicked off 2011 with several hot, new handsets and analyst Walter Piecyk of BTIG Research canvassed 150 different Verizon Wireless stores to find out which handset is Verizon’s top selling model. Unsurprisingly, the top handsets in Verizon’ lineup are the iPhone 4 and the HTC Thunderbolt. Piecyk’s results show the two handsets are selling at an equal rate at the majority (61%) of Verizon’s stores, while the Thunderbolt is outselling the iPhone at 28% of store’s surveyed. In 11% of the stores, sales of the iPhone 4 was outpacing the Thunderbolt.
On paper, the Thunderbolt outshines the Verizon iPhone 4 with its 4G connectivity and its 4.3-inch touch screen which bests the iPhone’s smaller 3.5-inch touchscreen display and its slower 3G EV-DO data. The Thunderbolt is also the newer of the two handsets, having launched on March 17th. While the iPhone 4 may have the popularity of an Apple product, the momentum is in the Thunderbolt’s favor.
