AT&T is killing its Video Share service as we speak. Select customers got the message on the left and were (we guess) speechless. No longer will they be able to share clips via AT&T, rather they’ll have to use YouTube, Facebook or some other service. Do I hear tears dropping? No? That’s what I thought, as well.
Anyway, Engadget pinged the carrier and got this response:
AT&T is discontinuing our Video Share service. As we look ahead to the next generation of live, mobile video calling services, we’re evaluating new platforms and other ways we can evolve our mobile video calling offers. We’ve already begun to notify subscribers directly and will work with them to adjust their monthly charges accordingly. The service will be retired later this year.
As a reminder, AT&T introduced Video Share in the summer of 2007 to allow users with select 3G devices to share (and stream) videos while on a voice call. Unsurprisingly the service never took off and we’re even wondering why it took so long to kill it. RIP Video Share, we never liked you anyway…
