During eBay’s first quarter earnings call, the company said that its transaction arm PayPal expects to process more than $2 billion in mobile payments in 2011, which is nearly three times the amount it processed last year.
According to eBay’s CEO John Donahoe, mobile payments offer strong growth potential for PayPal particularly since it doesn’t require users to enter their credit card information, addressing consumers’ concerns over security. “The fact is PayPal is the only safe way to pay on mobile phones,” he told analysts.
In addition, Donahoe also talked about PayPal’s operations at the physical point of sale which was made possible by partnering with VeriFone Systems and Bling Nation. To that end, eBay announced that it has acquired Fig Card, the maker of a low cost USB device that plugs into the cash register, offering merchants an easy way to handle mobile payments.
We’ve no doubts 2011 will be a big year for mobile payments with PayPal being solidly positioned to take advantage of the trend…
