Comcast was an investor in the Clearwire network and we now know why. Comcast is now offering a 3G/4G personal hotspot.
The Comcast Intenet2Go 3G/4G hotspot is a Novatel MiFi with the Xfinity branding. When it’s in 4G coverage areas, it can provide download speeds of up to 6 Mbps down and 1.4 Mbps up. If there’s no WiMax in your area, it will fall back to CDMA 3G.
As you would expect from a 3G/4G hotspot, this will create a portable WiFi zone for your other devices. The device costs $25 and the first 12 months will cost $40 per month for 5 GB. The price then moves up to $55 a month.
“This new product gives customers the flexibility to instantly create their own secure hotspot everywhere they go,” said Tom Nagel, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Wireless Services for Comcast, in a prepared statement. “Consumers want mobile Internet access for Wi-Fi-enabled devices like iPads, laptops and smartphones, and with this offering they can share their connection with family, friends or colleagues and can even watch TV and movies on-the-go.”
The Comcast Xfinity 3G/4G personal hotspot is just the latest move by a cable company to move into the mobile space. Cox has been building out its own mobile network and it offers its own voice and mobile data plans.
