Those of you into music, and more specifically music videos, will have probably heard of Vevo. They offer over 25,000 free legal Flash-powered music videos, namely on YouTube, thanks to partnerships with Universal and Sony. Some welcome news out of BlackBerry World last week was that they’re going to be launching a PlayBook app to follow up on their Android and iOS products. Details on the launch are scarce for now, but all of the tabs that you would expect are there: featured, artists, playlists, and a music map to show who’s listening to what where. Sorting options are available so you can find tunes based on when music videos are posted, which genre they fall under, and the view count. There’s also a search bar in the top-right to find specific videos.
Over my time with the PlayBook, it has proven to be great for consuming video, thanks in no small part to the cirsp 1024 x 600 display, support for Flash in the browser, high quality stereo speakers, and a buxom dual-core 1 GHz processor that can handle 1080p without breaking a sweat. Check out my review of the BlackBerry PlayBook here and skip down to the HDMI-out demo video to see what I’m talking about.
Vevo is a perfect example of how yeah, a Flash-enabled browser can get you rich content, but a dedicated application will take better advantage of screen real estate, notifications, gestures, and other device-specific functions. No word on specific availability, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see Vevo as a preload on some of the HSPA+, LTE, or WiMAX PlayBooks that launch later this summer.
