It’s not only individual Apple store employees that are providing exceptional support to the people of Japan after a rocky couple of weeks; Apple will be offering free repairs for iPhones, iPads and other products until June 30 in affected areas. Deliveries are included in the service, but there may be delays (which is to be expected). A working iPhone may be a small comfort when residents are still recovering with losing their homes, cars, personal possessions and loved ones, but being able to remain connected in an environment of chaos does have some value.
Although Apple’s making nice with consumers in Japan, it was rumoured that they pushed OEM partners for iPad 2 parts ahead of the competition in the wake of the earthquake. Some manufacturers had delays as a result of the catastrophe, while others emerged unscathed. If they actually did cut in line for parts shipments, it’s interesting to see Apple demonstrate both compassion and competitiveness in the same situation, but not entirely unexpected.
