A Lebanese hacking group called Idahca has apparently gained access to personal information of over 2,000 shoppers at Sony Ericsson’s online e-shop. Data included e-mail addresses, names, encrypted passwords, and though credit card and other sensitive information was available, Idahca says they didn’t take any. Right now the shop is down, but it will likely be back up once this mess is all sorted.
This follows up on a serious attack on Sony’s online PlayStation Network, which took millions of gamers offline for several weeks, and exposed much of their personal data to some less-than-reputable sources. That attack was backlash from the internet community following legal action Sony had taken against a young programmer that had reverse-engineered PlayStation 3 software and posted the procedure online for others to try out.
While it’s good news that the hackers decided not to take credit card information, they did say that everything they did acquire was released on Facebook and Twitter, making Sony Ericsson shoppers liable targets for spam advertising at the very least. Any of those that have done shopping online with Sony Ericsson Canada directly might want to double check their credit card statements, just to make sure there really aren’t any shenangins going on. Resetting some passwords may be in order too.
