Sony S2 Android Honeycomb tablet gets some hands-on action

With so many Android Honeycomb tablets on the way a company needs to stand out to get noticed. Whether is tweaked software, a super thin and light design, or incredible pricing, there are many routes companies are going in. Sony is taking a different approach with its S2 Android Honeycomb tablet and decided to throw two displays that fold instead of one large screen. We’ve seen smartphones like this, and while devices like Echo are anything but impressive, the interest of having more than one display on a mobile device hasn’t waned. The dual-screen tablet recently got some hands on time and even through we’re still not sure what we think of the device, the S2 still has us wanting more.

Shipping with two 5.5 inch displays that fold into each other, when closed the S2 looks slick but you may not even know what it is until you see it opened up. The design is beautiful, even if it looks to be a glorified Nintendo DS. The S2’s larger brother, the S1, will boast similar internal specs, but the two vary dramatically in terms of design. Still, since these tablets are from Sony, both are aimed at gamers and will feature the Playstation Suite that offers up original PS games to download.

So what’s the big deal of having two screens on a tablet device? Well, portability is a major factor and the ability to fold the tablet in half makes it much easier to carry the device around in a back without having to sacrifice screen real estate. That said, from our experience with devices of this kind the small separator of the two displays gets in the way and may not appeal to everyone.

We do know that Samsung may bring out a similar tablet to the S2 but instead of sporting two displays Sammy’s tablet may feature it’s foldable AMOLED displays, which will give it an edge over the competition.

Are you interested in the Sony S2 or will you look into what Samsung may bring to market?
