Google Voice gets spam filtering – goodbye telemarketers!

Google Voice users will be happy to know that spam calls will be blocked automatically by Google thanks to a new Global Spam Filtering feature. There is nothing more annoying than getting telemarketer or debt collector calls on your new Google Voice number because it either belonged to someone else before, or the number shows up on some registry for one reason or another.

Instead of scrolling down your list of calls and hitting “Report spam” on the spam numbers, Google will block those calls before it even hits your phone. How does this work?

Thanks to the help of the thousands of Google Voice users who mark calls as spam everyday—and our own spam identification tools—it is now possible to automatically redirect calls, texts, and voicemails from any of the numbers in our database directly into your spam folder.

To enable the feature, just log into your Google Voice account and go into settings and “Calls.” From there, you can scroll down and click on the box next to “Send calls and text messages from numbers identified as spam by Google directly to the Spam folder”and you should be all set! In the event that some numbers are mistakenly flagged as spam, you can go into your spam box and just uncheck them as such.

The more you mark certain numbers as spam, the greater Google’s database of spam numbers grows; so if any numbers slip through the cracks, be sure to continue marking them where they belong.
