Xperia Play for AT&T coming later this year

If you’re a gaming fan on AT&T and felt saddened to see the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play land at Verizon, fret not. The Android smartphone with a dedicated gaming pad is coming to your carrier. It looks just like the CDMA variant, but it comes in two colors – black or blue. Awesome, right? You’ll also be graced with a few additional games, too. Preloaded games include Asphalt 6, Crash Bandicoot, Sims 3, Madden and Dungeon Defenders: 2nd Wave.

The Xperia Play for AT&T is running Android 2.3 Gingerbread, which is the latest version of the Google smartphone software. It has a 4-inch display, which is just fine for playing games in landscape mode, a 1GHz Qualcomm processor and front and rear facing cameras, and that means you’ll be able to make video calls.

Unfortunately, we don’t know when this thing will be launching, or any pricing details, either. AT&T did tell us, however, that it is scheduled to be released by year end. This means you can pick one up as a stocking stuffer for a loved one, or perhaps even for yourself. But it does make me curious: will anyone care about an eight-month-old device by then?
