Qualcomm said that it has acquired a number of gesture-recognition assets from GestureTek and that it will be incorporating this technology into current and future versions of its Snapdragon processors.
The deal will give Qualcomm intellectual patents, engineering resources and more regarding gesture-recognition technology and this could open the door for a new way to interact with your smartphones. The company is staying quiet on what exactly this will mean for your devices but Snapdragon chips are inside the majority of Android phones right now (and all Windows Phone 7 devices), so it should have a big impact.
“Applications processors are enabling a range of new ways for consumers to interface with their home entertainment and mobile devices,” said Steve Mollenkopf, executive vice president and group president, Qualcomm, in a prepared statement. “Our acquisition of key technology and assets from GestureTek will strengthen Qualcomm’s smartphone product portfolio and enable our customers to launch products with new and compelling user experiences.”
While I was digging around GestureTek’s website, I noticed some interesting demos which show what may soon be capable on smartphones. I saw a lot of Kinnect-like gesture controls and believe that elements of this could be implemented on phones that have a front-facing camera for a more natural way to interact with a device.
