Zappar wants to bring augmented reality at in-store point of sale

Zappar is a new mobile app that brings videogame characters and other 3D objects to life at in-store point of sale. The augmented reality application was launched exclusively at GAMESCOM Expo in Cologne, Germany, promoting the videogame All Zombies Must Die! in partnership with games developer and distributor – doublesix.

The Zappar technology allows consumers and brands to access a “new world of entertainment and visual excitement” just by pointing their iPhone or Android device at any Zappar activated image. That “Zappar activated image” doesn’t look sounds like image recognition technology which is something both junaio and Layar (with its recently launched Layar Vision) offer. In that sense, I’m not sure I like Zappar though I guess it’s easier to make marked objects react than to actually recognize them.

In any case, if you own an iPhone or Android-powered smartphone, you can try out Zappar from the two links below. I’m sure after their deal with doublesix is just a start and that soon enough they’ll get more companies to try out their service…
