It’s early September, and that means Google has updated the version numbers on the Android developer site. Unsurprisingly, Gingerbread is on the rise, virtually everything else is shrinking, and Honeycomb is still barely a blip on the radar.
Last month we saw Gingerbread taking up almost a quarter of the pie, and now it’s over 30% of all devices. Collectively coming in at 31.3%, Gingerbread’s rise takes mostly from Android 2.2’s share, which now sits right above 50% with 51.2%. By this time next month, Froyo may still be the dominate version of the OS but we’re pretty much certain it will no longer hold half of the Android pie.
As we’ve been saying for the past few months, Cupcake, Donut, and Eclair are on their way out. Collectively making up 16.1% of the chart, Eclair still holds onto 13.3%, with Cupcake 1.0% and Donut at 1.8%. While it will take some time before Eclair is officially out the door, Android 1.5 and 1.6 may soon disappear in the coming months. With no handsets shipping with anything under Froyo these days, and 55,000 handsets being activated a day, Cupcake and Donut should eventually dwindle to nothing.
Honeycomb hasn’t really done much in the past month, as it’s only gained 0.1%. The number between the three incremental versions of Honeycomb have shifted, all towards Android 3.2. Honeycomb has still yet to gets its proper footing in the market and that likely won’t change until Ice Cream Sandwich rolls around, which is bound to bring some much-needed features to the table(t).
Speaking of Ice Cream Sandwich, the latest version of the Android operating system is set to debut next month (hopefully) when the Nexus Prime or Droid Prime are rumored to land. It will likely take a while before the latest dessert begins to pop up in the chart you see above, but we’re patiently awaiting its arrival.
