Millennial Media’s Mobile Mix for August: Android and iOS grow while others slow

Millennial Media has released its latest Mobile Mix report for the month of August and as you’d expect, the mobile world is on fire. Android still leads the mobile space but iOS is still going strong as ever, with the likes of BlackBerry and other mobile operating systems struggling to keep up with the two.

This particular Mobile Mix report combines existing handsets with legacy handsets together (iPhone 4 + iPhone 3GS, etc, = Motorola Droid + Droid 2, etc.) in the top 20 handsets chart. Doing this paints a better picture when it comes to seeing what handsets people actually have in their pockets right now and unsurprisingly, the iPhone make up 13.06% of said chart. The LG Optimus took the second spot with 6.71%, which isn’t too surprising when you think about it since the handset is very cheap, if not free, on contract.

Of the top 20 handsets, 15 of them are running Android, collectively making up almost 33% of the chart. iOS and Android make up the majority of the top handsets but the BlackBerry Curve is still going strong, with the Bold, Torch, and Pearl making the list as well.

The Device OS Mix looks a bit different this month, as Millennial Media has now included connected devices, including tablets, handheld gaming systems (Nintendo DS, PSP), and MP3 players/iPod Touches. Doing this scales Android’s share back to 54% from the 61% we saw back in July and brings Apple’s 21% in July to 28%. With so many iPod Touches and iPads in the world, I was surprised that Apple gained what it did but  we suppose Android’s 550,000 activations a day helped it retain its lead.

We hope to see the addition of connected devices and legacy devices make it to future Mobile Mix reports, and we likely will.

Android and iOS are killing it in the mobile space? Color us surprised.
