ZTE prepping quad-core Android tablet

The company ZTE who’s better known for its feature phones, has just gotten FCC approval for its latest tablet, called the V55. According to the picture the FCC posted, the new slate is headed for Sprint. Features for the V55 includes:

  • 10.1-inch display with a WVGA 1280×800 resolution
  • 1 GHz QUAD-Core processor (chip is unknown)
  • Android Honeycomb (it’s unclear which version of Honeycomb)
  • 5 megapixel rear-facing camera
  • 32 GB  built-in memory storage
  • 3250 mAh battery

What’s also noted in the FCC filings, is the device will only have 3G access to Sprint’s network, along with WiFI and Bluetooth. Unfortunately, LTE or WiMAX was not mentioned in the filing, so we’ll probably just have to wait for the company to provide us more information about other carrier partners, a release date and pricetag.

If ZTE can hit the sweet spot when it comes to pricing, then the V55 will be a competitive device in a market which has hundreds of different Android tablets. If it doesn’t deliver on price, it’ll be overwhelmed by cheaper tablets with similar specs, like the $200 Kindle Fire or the Archos 80 G9 which is expected to release for $279. Who knows how this thing will be priced, but as devices with dual-core (and now quad-core) processors begin to roll out, it’s a great time for consumers.
