Looking to jailbreak your iDevice after a fresh install of iOS 5? Well, it seems you didn’t have to wait very long, as Redsn0w didn’t hesitate for more than 24 hours before releasing a solution. Version 0.9.9b4 adds support for iOS 5 on iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, third and fourth generation iPod touch, and the iPad 1.
On the team’s to-do list is support for iPhone 4S and iPad 2 and an untethered jailbreak. Currently, only a tethered jailbreak is supported, which put simply is a pain in the ass.
If you are at all interested in unapproved third-party apps and functionality or if you just like pissing Apple off, follow these steps. First download Redsn0w, either for Mac or Windows. Next, launch the application, click “Jailbreak”, and plug in your device. Make sure it is powered off. Then hold both the Sleep and Home button simultaneously for ten seconds.
After that, let go of the Sleep button and continue pressing Home for another fifteen seconds or so. This puts your device in DFU mode. Finally, load the iOS 5 IPSW file and wait for the jailbreak process to run its course. It’s in your best interest to install Cydia as well for the full effect.
Success! Your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad is now jailbroken and you can now soak in all the new features and the slight adrenaline kick that comes along with it.
