It is said that when The Early Edition was launched alongside the original iPad in 2010 it was one of the apps that redefined the daily newspaper. Now it got a big update in an effort to yet again accomplish the same thing. There is a ton of changes included in this release, like:
- Two reader modes – Google Reader Sync and Standalone mode
- New page layouts with awesome page turn animation that can follow your finger
- Optional display style overrides for Feeds or Sections (Normal, Photo & Photo + Border)
- Clever hidden toolbar which allows you to enjoy the content without the distraction of buttons
- All images are cached allowing for better offline experience (very cool)
- Swipeable gallery mode accessible when you double-tap some image
- Searchable – you can look for specific search terms and save them for one-tap access in the future
- Clippings aka Favorites – allows you to save some stories for reading later
- Featured Feeds – curated list suggestions for topics and news sources.
- iOS 5 Twitter integration
- Integration with popular sharing services like Instapaper, Facebook, Delicious and Read It Later
The Early Edition 2 is a whole new application, rebuilt over the course of 12 months, hence Glasshouse Apps decided to make it a paid update. Not sure how will that help them compete with Flipboard and AOL Edition, but what do I know…
