Office 365 brings cloud productivity suite to BlackBerry

RIM has just announced a beta program for Office 365 on BlackBerry, which will offer business organizations Exchange synchronization and security options, without all of the hosting hassle. A browser-based console allows managers and end-users to keep tabs on their BlackBerry deployment, including remote wiping if needed, and the usual sync between e-mail, calendar, contacts, tasks, and memopad applications on mobile, web, and desktop. BlackBerry Balance is also supported, so employees can keep their business and personal data separate.

Considering RIM’s existing partnership with Microsoft for Bing, moves like this reek of Nokia’s situation not so long ago. RIM’s stock isn’t looking great, which some feel make the manufacturer a ripe target for acquisition. While such a drastic move might not be in the cards just yet, if RIM fails to deliver a competitive product with their BBX platform early next year, BlackBerry may be in a position where they have to switch platforms wholesale. The big question is, would they move to Windows Phone like Nokia did, or Android since they’re already getting involved with Google’s OS?

The open beta for Office 365 on BlackBerry is available across 30 countries; if you’re interested in trying it out, apply in the Beta Zone. You can find more information about what Office 365 is capable of doing over here.
