We have some great news for you AT&T customers out in NYC. It turns out Ma Bell is rolling out its LTE service “very soon,” says Larry Solomon, SVP of communications for AT&T. This news broke today when the executive spoke at Mashable’s Media Summit, but no further information was shared about the roll out.
New York will be included in a list of the first major city’s to offer the 4G LTE network through AT&T. These cities are Dallas-Forth Worth, San Antonio, Houston, Atlanta and Chicago. The second largest carrier will also launch LTE service in Boston, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and Athens, Ga., this Sunday, and by the end of 2011, AT&T plans to offer LTE to 70 million people in 15 major metropolitan areas.
The good news about this LTE deployment it’s free of charge to all customers, so if buy either the HTC Vivid or Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket after Nov. 6, you get to enjoy speeds almost identical to T-Mobile’s HSPA+ service. Sorry, all iPhone’s are left out, as the device only supports 3G. It’s yet to be seen if the new 4G service will improve AT&T’s troubling 3G network, but time will tell.
