Rogers today announced a great new app for their digital TV and internet customers that happen to also own an iPad. Rogers Live TV will stream some 20 stations over Wi-Fi directly to an iPad, including the biggies like CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX, CBC, and YTV. Rogers had previously dipped their toe in the live streaming video thing with Fifa World Cup on the iPad and their existing streaming on-demand app for smartphones.
This is a pretty sweet service, but the only clincher is that you have to be married twice to Rogers – once for internet service, and again for TV. I’m curious if they’ll sub in wireless service as a requirement for support on LTE-enabled devices down the road. I used to be in that position, but have since jumped ship to Teksavvy and Mobilicity, who both win out when it comes to bang for buck (if not slick crossover products like this). My big worry is that Rogers will do something stupid like ask for another $5/month for access to the app once it leaves beta and goes live in 2012. Your loyalty should be enough at this point, n’est-ce pas, mes amis? Fingers crossed.
The link to the new Rogers Live TV app is in the App Store, but make sure you have your Rogers MyAccount linked to all of your services before giving it a shot. If you own an Android tablet, sit tight- another version will be heading your way soon.
