Shots of Sony’s first Xperia phone without Ericsson

New photos have appeared of a Sony Xperia phone without the Ericsson tag, as the company begins to transition into one name only (which may take until the summer of 2012 to close). Sony for the last couple of months have made some productive moves, with the sole intent of becoming a legit player when it comes to the top Android smartphone manufacturers. Rumored specs of the Sony branded Xperia pictured include the following:

  • 1GHz dual-core U8500 chipset from ST-Ericsson
  • 4-inch qHD display
  • 8MP Exmor R camera
  • 1GB RAM and 16GB ROM
  • Android Gingerbread on launch and upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich later
That sounds an awful lot like the Nypon, but the styling is all different, and it looks like the camera is on the other side. Honestly, I’m happy Sony has finally made the decision to take over Ericsson from a business and branding standpoint. The two partnering-up just seemed really confusing to me from day one. The company has been refocused on customer satisfaction, especially with rolling out an alpha ROM of Ice Cream Sandwich for select Xperia devices. Besides, I think Sony will take a more hands-on approach with developing future phones considering that they’re officially a handset OEM now. The Xperia line are good-looking phones, but in the future Sony needs to not only add some great internals, but better unite its product ecosystem to its smartphones; if this is done they should be fine.
