According to the latest report from NPD In-Stat, last year ended with 29 million active mobile VoIP users, up from 9 million in 2010. Service providers have increased smartphone penetration and competition to thank for this surge in demand. Moreover, some mobile operators also started embracing mobile VoIP, helping drive the usage.

However, the research company points that mobile VoIP market is still in its infancy, with most offerings only being developed over the past several years, leaving a ton of space for further growth.

Some other NPD’s findings include:

  • The primary distribution channel to access mobile VoIP offerings is through the OS application store.
  • The largest concentration of mobile VoIP users is in Western Europe.
  • Revenues associated with mobile VoIP usage will increase to over $4 billion in 2015.
  • LTE operators are not likely to have a significant impact on the mobile VoIP market until 2013.

And you can get additional information about NPD’s report from their website.
