Announced for the iPad in February 2011, The Daily was the first magazine designed from the ground up for tablets. Now the News Corp. digital magazine will be available on select Android tablets by the end of the month. Verizon Wireless is partnering with News Corp to bring the publication to its tablets before any other carrier. The first of the bunch to get access to The Daily is the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.
Whether or not The Daily has been a success thus far is a little bit cloudy. There’s no question that the magazine delivers a totally interactive and intuitive news consumption experience, but how are things from News Corp.’s perspective? It touts that the publication was the #3 top grossing app in the iPad App Store for 2011. This is great, but back in October we heard from numerous reports that The Daily only had about 120,000 subscribers. News Corp. won’t release any numbers, but since the app is expanding onto more platforms, that must be a good sign, right?
For unknown reasons, pricing for The Daily is slightly different than the model for iPad. The iPad version currently sells for $0.99 per week or $39.99 per year with a one week free trial. The Android version will hang on to that $40/year price and initial free trial, but instead will move to a $3.99 per month model as an alternative. The pricing evens itself out, but I’m not sure why The Daily switched from weekly to monthly payments for Android, unless there’s some requirement in the Android Market that forced the company to change things around.
Galaxy Tab 10.1 owners should be able to enjoy this digital magazine within a couple weeks or so. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 announced at CES 2012 will get The Daily later on.
