Ericsson triples uplink capacity in HSPA networks

Ericsson managed to triple uplink capacity in HSPA networks. This solution was demonstrated last month, when they showed an increase from around 4Mbps to more than 12Mbps, which is an unprecedented figure for a 5MHz WCDMA carrier.

According to the Swedish company, the solution was made possible by combining Ericsson’s commercially available receiver technology, Ericsson Interference Suppression, with 4-antenna radio base stations. As a result, users with regular mobile devices will be able to achieve this gain — no update is needed on their behalf.

Interference Suppression is described as a base station receiver technology for WCDMA/HSPA that can vastly improve uplink speeds by increasing the network capacity. The magic happens thanks to advanced software algorithms which are used in the base station to reduce the negative effects of uplink interference that is the bottleneck in many HSPA networks. Moreover, the gains were further enhanced by the use of base stations configured with four antennas per cell.

Sounds cool, now let’s see which will be the first carrier to implement this…
