Nokia’s MeeGo running N9, the one and only device that’ll ever run said OS, is getting a new software update according to the guys at Nokia Conversations. They say that 70% of N9 owners have already had the update pushed out to them, and that the next 30% will have to wait another couple of weeks. So what’s inside this update anyway? Plenty. First up, folder support. Yes, it seems kind of lame that MeeGo hasn’t had this until now, but then again Google didn’t even bother adding folder support in Android until Ice Cream Sandwich. Next, the 8 megapixel camera now has zero shutter lag. Whenever you tap the screen to take a photo, what you see ends up being the final image. There’s also a burst mode that takes three frames per second, nine images in total. You can also now tag your friends in your photos, a feature that’s only existed on Windows Phone thus far.
Moving right along, the front facing video camera on the N9 has been sitting unused for over half a year. Now however, you’re able to use Google Talk to have a video call. It’s not Skype, it’s definitely not the video calling that Symbian handsets have been doing for years and years, but it’s better than nothing. Nokia Drive now also has more routing options, should you want to avoid tolls. It’ll also sync with locations you’ve looked up on Nokia Maps on your personal computer. There’s now DLNA in the N9, so you can share images to your TV over WiFi. The N9 also supports 5 new languages (Thai, Vietnamese, Hebrew, Persian, and Kazakh).
There’s browser updates, Mail for Exchange can now see your company’s global address list, you can create playlists and delete songs straight from the music player … basically this list never ends.
We salute Nokia for supporting what’s essentially a walking dead man.
