Survey: Apple number one mobile app platform

Well, Apple can add another notch to its belt, as the Cupertino-based manufacturer has become the most popular mobile platform among application developers, according to a survey.

This survey asked developers if they were interested in creating certain applications on various devices. The survey highlighted a bit of a dip when it came to developers wanting to write programs on Android as a first choice. Mike King, a strategist at Appcelerator (a firm who works closely with developers) thinks it has something to do with fragmentation.

“The platform is fragmenting as an array of hardware makers adapt it in different ways for their devices, unlike Apple’s platform, which is used exclusively by the maker of the iPhone and iPad” He continued saying, “The fragmentation of the platform, which Google seems unable to curtail, is driving this drop in interest.”

King may have a point, I mean, he’s not the only person tide to the developer community that has uttered these kind of words, as the maker of Battleheart, Mike Mobile, voiced the same sentiments why he was halting future work on Android titles.

Other than that, Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 was a steady third place at 37 percent, while Research In Motion’s BlackBerry fell behind yet again, with less than 16 percent expressing an interest, down from more than 20 per cent three months ago. Ouch!

That said, I must focus back to the Android point here, as this is starting to become a not so good trend for Google. I said it before, and I’ll say it again: I wouldn’t be surprised if more devs jumped from Android until it stabilizes a bit, because now there’s too many OS versions, and seemingly a zillion devices with different hardware. It’s becoming too much for developers to handle. This latest survey should add to the latest list of concerns.
