After being rumored for a few days, it looks like Beats Audio is buying MOG – the digital music subscription service – so perhaps it won’t be too long before we see this service deeply integrated into HTC handsets. Remember, HTC is the majority owner in Beats.
MOG was on my list for best mobile music services but it never seemed to gain as much traction as something like Spotify. There’s no word on how much the acquisition will be but MOG has raised a lot of cash, so perhaps it will be able to save face.
We have to wonder what this is going to mean for future HTC devices, as the manufacturer is trying to develop a host of services to help its devices stand out from the crowd. The Beats Audio is already integrated into certain handsets and the new One lineup will have deep integration with the Dropbox service.
Will MOG just give HTC a way to sell its own music or subscription services? It invested in Saffron Digital before and turned that into its HTC Watch service. Hopefully it can do things a bit differently and offer some free music because that could be a real differentiator.
