Motorola’s RAZR Maxx, affectionally known as the Droid RAZR Maxx in the United States, is arguably the company’s flagship device. It has a dual core 1.2 GHz Texas Instruments processor, 4.3 inch AMOLED screen (which sadly only does 540 x 960 pixels), 1 GB of RAM, and an 8 megapixel camera. What separates the Maxx from every other device on the market with similar specifications is the battery. The Maxx has an absolutely ridiculous 3,300 mAh battery. That’s almost double what the best Android smarpthone on the market, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, has inside. Now in America the Maxx needs that insane battery because 4G LTE consumes a lot of power, but Europe is different. On the other side of the pond the 4G LTE situation hasn’t sorted itself out yet. Some countries have it, some countries don’t, some countries use one band, other countries use another band. It’s safe to say that it’s going to take a while before everything gets resolved. That being said, the European version of the RAZR Maxx will support HSPA+. We don’t know which flavor, but there’s a screenshot on Motorola’s site showing the Maxx hitting over 11 megabits per second down. That would mean there’s at least a 21 Mbps radio inside.
So, should you buy this thing? If battery life is number one priority, then there’s no question. Motorola says the Maxx will do 17.6 hours of talk time and 607 hours of standby time. That’s a little over 25 days. We have to warn you though, the screen isn’t really nice. It’s tolerable, but there are devices out there with not only more pixels, but also more advanced technology.
If you want our honest opinion, we say wait. Rumor has it that Motorola is going to release an Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone during the first half of this year with a 4.6 inch 1280 x 720 pixel display and the same massive 3,300 mAh battery. That thing, whatever it ends up being called, will be delicious.
