Ongo iPad magazine updated its application to make it render perfectly on the shiny new iPad and its gorgeous Retina Display. But that’s not all, version 2.0 also comes with a number of other enhancements like new user interface and navigation, curated news modules, graphical title browser, integrated image view, editor-selected “related stories”, improved sharing capabilities (email, Facebook and Twitter), enhanced article layout and display, improved offline reading support, revised keyword search and results filtering, and increased volume and access.

The application itself is free to download but in order to keep using it you’ll have to subscribe, which is the benefit that will take $2 out of your pocket every month. That money gets you access to premium content from such providers as The New York Times, The Washington Post, USA Today, Associated Press, Financial Times, Reuters Top Stories and Pro Publica; as well as a number of blogs and magazines.

Unlike other personalized magazine apps that scatter through your and your friends’ RSS feeds and social network accounts, Ongo employs 6 full-time editors who sift through all the papers to find the best articles to present.

The company itself is a joint venture between The New York Times, The Washington Post and Gannett Company. The three publications invested a combined $12 million into the start-up that was launched in early 2011…
