Announced back in October 2011, the Motorola Droid RAZR for Verizon Wireless has been somewhat of a mixed bag. It’s insanely thin and gorgeous, but that PenTile AMOLED display just ruins the device. There was a fatter version (8.9 mm) introduced three months later called the RAZR MAXX that came with a 3,300 mAh battery, and not for nothing, that thing was bananas in terms of battery life. We’ve also seen the RAZR come out in white and in purple, but now it’s time to give blue a try. According to a leaked screenshot that was acquired by Android Central, Verizon will start selling the Motorla RAZR Smurf Edition on May 18th, which is not this coming Friday, but the one after. No word as to how much it’ll cost, but we don’t think it’ll deviate from the current $99 that today’s RAZR goes for if you order it from Verizon’s website.

Could Motorola be doing this to combat the Nokia Lumia 900 on AT&T? Possibly. Have you seen the blue Lumia 900? You can spot one from across the room. Handset makers these days are usually fearful of trying out new colors, but not Nokia. Samsung might have been the first company to come out with pink phones, but Nokia is killing it with their green feature phones, their blue/white/magenta Windows Phones, and the upcoming 808 PureView will be available in a shade of red that’s absolutely delicious.
Will other handset vendors jump in on the wild color game? We certainly hope so. In fact, we’re baffled as to why Apple doesn’t offer the iPhone in the same wild colors that they do their MP3 players. One could argue that Apple has gotten boring in that regard. And as for Samsung’s newest flagship, the Galaxy S III, dark blue and white aren’t very compelling options. When are we going to see a red or green Galaxy?
