Children in the U.S. of A have access to an average of 12 apps on mobile devices, the majority of which (88%) were downloaded for free. According to the research firm NPD Group, children use smartphones, tablets and smart media players like iPod Touch five days of the week, with the average session lasting just under one hour.
As expected, games are the single most popular app category among children, accounting for an average of 6.5 apps on a device. This is followed by listening to or downloading music, and taking pictures.
Gender wise, boys are more likely to play games than girls (87 versus 80 percent), while girls are more diverse in the apps they use.
NPD also had some advice for parents to share – they said that the availability of unlimited data plans from operators, and the supply of education apps should be key criteria.
And in case you wonder, NPD’s findings are based on 2,502 completed replies among adults in a household with children aged 2 to 14 years…
