A company called Nanosys is teaming-up with the Optical Systems Division of 3M to provide “wide color gamut technology” and make LCD screens display 50% more color. The two companies will work together to commercialize Nanosys’ Quantum Dot Enhancement Film (QDEF) technology, which is a drop-in film that LCD manufacturers can integrate with existing production processes.
Utilizing the light emitting properties of quantum dots to create better backlight for LCDs, QDEF will allow consumers to enjoy more visceral, more immersive and “truer to life” colors.
The problem with existing LCD screens is that they are limited to displaying 35% or less of the visible color spectrum, making the viewing experience on an LCD vastly different than what a person sees in the real world.
A quantum dot, which is 10,000 times smaller than the width of a human hair, can emit light at a very precise wavelength. Trillions of these dots are packaged into a thin film that fits inside an LCD backlight unit, replacing a similar film already found inside LCD backlights…
And in case you wonder – we’ve no idea when first LCD screens with QDEF technology will be released.
