Tumblr is blogging for the rest of us. You login, pick what kind of content you want to create, and then create it. The company has had an iOS app for what feels like forever, but it isn’t exactly a pleasure to use. You can do everything with the app that you can do on the desktop, but it’s the performance that leaves a lot to be desired. Well, according to David Karp, the CEO of Tumblr who is about to turn 26 years old, there’s going to be a brand spanking new iOS application coming out this week. David hasn’t hinted at what new features it’ll have, but we can only assume that we’ll see a fresh coat of paint and some much needed tuning.
While we’re on the subject of expressing your thoughts via mobile devices, what other applications do you guys use to do that? There’s obviously Twitter and the numerous clients that can connect to it, then Facebook, and of course Path, but now there’s a new class of social networks being created that are tuned specifically towards small groups of people. Let’s be realistic, your hundreds of friends on network X, Y, or Z, probably don’t care about what you’re having for lunch, but what if the people you hang out every day could see what you’re eating and then suggest that you and a few other friends get together to hang out and cook one day?
Look, we’re at the beginning of this whole social networking thing. Facebook is hot today, but it likely won’t be tomorrow. Tumblr is hip with people in the publishing industry, but that aura of cool isn’t guaranteed. We’re living in both exciting times, where anything is possible, but also tired times, where new social networks make us groan because they ask us to connect with everyone yet again.
Anyway, philosophizing aside, we look forward to the new Tumblr app.
