MetroPCS announced the world’s first commercial launch of Voice over LTE (VoLTE) services along with the world’s first VoLTE-capable handset – LG Connect 4G. The new Android-based smartphone is available at the company’s Dallas/Fort Worth stores with other areas to get it in the coming weeks. Calls to and from the handset will use VoLTE, regardless of the phone or network used on the other end of the call.
Specs wise, the Connect 4G comes with a 4-inch WVGA screen, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 5-megapixel rear camera, VGA front-facing one, 3G/4G and Wi-Fi connectivity.
At the end of the press release, MetroPCS reminded us it was the first U.S. carrier to deploy a commercial 4G LTE network in September 2010 and has since built out its 4G LTE network to cover roughly 90% of its CDMA footprint.
