Nintendo is apparently working on a smartphone app that will support its Miiverse content. The application, which will be a rare foray into the mobile space for the company, will be released at some point this spring, allowing users to browse Miiverse from their devices. Initially everything would work via the browser, but “Nintendo plans to create a dedicated Miiverse app in the future”.

We’ve no information which platforms Nintendo will target initially, but it’s fair to bet they’re looking at iOS and Android as their prime targets.

Miiverse, for those who don’t know, is a social network designed to support the company’s Wii U games console. It’s integrate into a number of Wii U games, allowing users to compete against each other.

Nintendo has been avoiding mobile market for quite some time and as far as we know (aside from this Miiverse app), the company will continue to do so. At one point, Nintendo’s president Satoru Iwata even said that mobile is “absolutely not under consideration”. With smartphones now being adopted by a mainstream consumer, things obviously need to change…
