A company called Breathometer is announcing what it says is the world’s first smartphone breathalyzer, which is easy to carry around and should thus make our roads that much safer.

The size of a typical car key, it plugs into a headphone jack, and — together with a mobile app — transforms the smartphone into a breathalyzer to measure blood alcohol concentration (BAC).

The device and mobile app will sing along iOS and Android smartphones, making sure the widest possible audience is reached. Aside from providing users with BAC information, the application also connects users with local transportation services to quickly connect with a cab or taxi.

Breathometer will be FDA approved and is patent pending. It is touted as ideal for anyone who enjoys even a casual drink, as just one drink can affect judgment or the ability to drive safely.

The company will make Breathometer available in Summer 2013, and in the meantime you can secure your unit through Indiegogo for as little as $20. Check it out from here.
