NEC should bring its Medias W folding smartphone to the West; Use Kickstarter if you have to

Here’s an idea worth thinking about, or so I think. I believe there’s a demand for a versatile device such as the NEC Medias W. As you may know from our previous writing, I’m talking about a folding smartphone that has two screens, though it can work perfectly fine with just one of them.

The problem, however, is that NEC is having hard time bringing its gear to the West. And I’m sure I’m not the only one who would love something like their Medias W smartphone.

The way I see it, NEC (and other Japanese handset makers for that matter) could cheaply test their products and see if there’s enough demand for them by turning to services like Kickstarter and Indiegogo. Using these tools, NEC could test the customers’ interest and only if it reaches the tipping point, sell the actual phone(s). The Medias W seems like a perfect fit for this test. NEC could easily offer different versions of the phone, each catered towards a different market and/or carrier — since not everyone needs an LTE model.

I would be interested to buy a device like the NEC Medias W as long as it has fast processor and two 720p HD screens, which can work as one giant display. What about you – would you be willing to get such phone using a service like Kickstarter? And do you agree Kickstarter could be used as a launch platform for major companies such as NEC?
