Since Blood Omen came out way back in 1996, the Legacy of Kain series has brought hardcore vampire action to bloodthirsty gamers. Sadly, the franchise that spawned Soul Reaver has been dormant since 2003’s Legacy of Kain: Defiance. Now Square Enix is bringing the undead back from the dead with its new free to play online title, Nosgoth.

Nosgoth pits humans and vampires against each other, battling it out in the world of the Legacy of Kain Series. Vampires have brute strength and superhuman abilities like flying, but don’t count the humans out. The mortals have superior technology and stealth. So if you play as a human, you might snipe a ferocious vamps head clean off from a safe distance. Of course, if you’ve got a taste for blood and go with a vampire character, you can just rip heads of point-blank.

An official release date has yet to be announced, but it should be coming soon. It will be available on Steam The announcement trailer shows off some nice looking gameplay footage and has members of the dev team explaining features of the game. Its looking pretty good, and you can watch it at the bottom of the page. For more information, the announcement follows below:

Hello and welcome to Nosgoth, the new bloodthirsty, free-to-play, competitive online multiplayer title from Square Enix and Psyonix set in the Legacy of Kain universe.

We’re very excited to reveal the game to you today. There’s been a lot of speculation about what exactly Nosgoth would be, so we’re thrilled to finally talk openly about the game.

For a glimpse of the game in action, check out the announcement trailer below:

Nosgoth is defined by fast and brutal melee versus ranged gameplay. You’ll fight in team-based multiplayer battles as one of two warring factions – the Humans or the Vampires. The Humans are merciless hunters trained in an arsenal of lethal ranged weaponry and specialized devices. The Vampires, meanwhile, are vicious predators that rely on ferocious up-close attacks augmented by their innate inhuman abilities.

We’re focused on developing a balanced ranged vs. melee experience that’s straightforward for newcomers while providing plenty of depth for veterans to master. We’re hoping that by enabling you to play for free, as many of you as possible will ultimately get to try out Nosgoth and come to enjoy this distinctive dynamic as much as we do.

At Psyonix, we’re passionate about team-based multiplayer games. When Square Enix approached us to help create Nosgoth, we were excited to use our experience working on titles like Bulletstorm, Gears of War, Mass Effect 3, and Unreal Tournament 2004 to deliver something unique in the multiplayer genre.

REGISTER FOR THE CLOSED ALPHA/BETA & HELP SHAPE THE GAME

Nosgoth is a live game – we will be constantly updating it to make the moment-to-moment gameplay experience as captivating and satisfying as possible. It’s a process of continual fine-tuning and revision in which your feedback is a crucial element and will inform how the game evolves over time.

Right now, we’re looking for passionate and committed gamers to sign up to our Closed Alpha/Beta program and help us make the game better, so we’d be honored to have you on board. Just click the button on the right to register and follow the instructions, and we’ll let you know as soon as we’re ready to bring you aboard.

In the meantime, speak up in our forums – we look forward to hearing from you.

– Corey Davis, Design Director at Psyonix
