Microsoft may have just pulled off the greatest publicity stunt of all time! Its Giant Xbox One unlocked on Halloween and released a horde of the undead on unsuspecting gamers. Those who escaped with their brains intact were treated to some fun freebies, courtesy of Microsoft and Dead Rising 3!

Check out the vine of the event from user Brian Davis

We recently reported that Microsoft had installed a giant Xbox One console in Vancouver, B.C.. Microsoft asked gamers to pledge their Xbox Live gamertags to make the huge Xbox One “unlock”.

Unlock it did, revealing a hungry, shambling horde intent on making a meal of the crowd of gamers outside. As the zombies poured out, the interior of the giant Xbone was revealed. Inside a ton of playable Xbox One’s (regular sized) were lined up, loaded with Dead Rising 3, Killer Instinct, Ryse, and Forza 5.

There were also make-up artists on hand to zombify gamers. Once zombified, you could have your picture taken with a special Dead Rising 3 backdrop, and take a print home for free.

Inside the zombies’ former home, a bank of Xbox One demo units was awaiting passers by, offering an early chance to play Dead Rising 3, Killer Instinct, Ryse and Forza 5. There were also make-up artists on standby to transform people into zombies, and photographers providing the opportunity to receive a custom-made Dead Rising 3 print starring themselves.

Microsoft loves its massive publicity stunts. Recently the company erected a giant Microsoft Surface in London’s Trafalgar Square. The 40 foort by 20 foot Xbox One was only the latest in the monumental marketing-strategy. But it’s definitely a sign that Microsoft’s stepping up its game.

With the Xbox One’s main console competitor, Sony’s PS4, launching in just a couple weeks, Microsoft’s trying to maintain a high profile. I think we might see a few more publicity stunts before this thing is through!
