Samsung has developed the industry’s first 8 gigabit (Gb) or 1 Gigabyte (1GB) LPDDR4 DRAM for mobile devices in an effort to provide the highest level of density, performance and energy efficiency for mobile memory applications. This in turn will enable end users to have faster, more responsive applications, more advanced features, and higher resolution displays while maximizing battery life.

“This next-generation LPDDR4 DRAM will contribute significantly to faster growth of the global mobile DRAM market, which will soon comprise the largest share of the entire DRAM market,” said Young-Hyun Jun, executive vice president, memory sales & marketing, Samsung Electronics.

Fabricated on a 20nm class process technology, Samsung’s new 8Gb LPDDR4 mobile DRAM packs 1 gigabyte (GB) on a single die, which is the largest density available for DRAM components today. With four of these chips, a single 4GB LPDDR4 package can provide the highest level of performance. The data transfer rate is set at 3,200 megabits per second (Mbps) per pin, or twice that of the 20nm-class LPDDR3 DRAM. Finally, the new DRAM consumes approximately 40% less energy at 1.1 volts.

Earlier this year, Samsung unveiled the 3GB LPDDR3 (6Gb) package solution that is being used in the Note 3. So the chances are the next Note and perhaps the Galaxy S5 will come with full 4GB of RAM, potentially enabling new powerful software on mobile devices. We’ll see how that goes…
