DreamWorks wants to enter the tablet space. To that end, the company has partnered with Fuhu, make of the Nabi line of tablets, to produce an Android tablet for kids.
The forthcoming Dreamtab will come with an 8-inch screen and a price tag of “under $300,” according to the New York Times. In addition, and this is how DreamWorks wants to differentiate its offering from the rest of the market, it will feature regularly updated original content based on DreamWorks characters.
According to DreamWorks animation producer Nancy Bernstein, kids will get to enjoy a series of “character moments” with characters from DreamWorks franchises in the context of on-tablet events. For instance, you could see Shrek characters performing a skit telling a child to turn off their tablet in time with a parental timing lock. In addition, DreamWorks will also bundle drawing lessons along with the “same stylus technology that DreamWorks artists use to make movies” to allow kids to draw along.
Fuhu and DreamWorks may also include branded toys as part of the deal, enabling users to unlock themed games with separately-sold action figures.
The two companies hope to launch the Dreamtab this spring and offer it alongside a range of accessories such as DreamWorks-branded headphones, bumpers and cases. If everything goes as planned, a version with a 12-inch display will follow later in the year.
