BBC iPlayer hits version 3.0 for Nokia phones

BBC has updated its iPlayer app for select Nokia Symbian S60 3rd and 5th Edition smartphones. Version 3.0 is no longer a stand-alone widget app, but a simple widget shortcut that once started redirects user to a web page from where he or she can access BBC’s video content. In that sense, you can simply point your S60 browser to bbc.co.uk/mobile/iplayer/ and take it from there — there’s no need to install the app at all.

Feature wise, iPlayer kept all the good things from the previous release, including live streaming, catch-up streaming and download for TV. You can browse and search for channels, and watch content both via WiFi or 3G connection — actually you’ll have to be a Vodafone or 3 subscriber in order for streaming over 3G to work.

In terms of enhancements, the iPlayer looks much smoother now and there’s also an additional tab called “Favourites,” which obviously allows you to access your previously bookmarked channels and/or recently played content.

On the downside, some of the most popular Nokia smartphones are not supported, including the Nokia E72. I’ve no doubts BBC wants the E72 owners too, and in that sense I would expect to see the updated iPlayer being released soon. In addition to bringing support for more devices, the updated (web) application will most likely add the social functionality that was recently added to the PC version…
