Nokia, ‘Heroes’ creator team for augmented reality game

Nokia is teaming up with “Heroes” creator Tim Kring to launch a mobile augmented reality game called “Conspiracy of Good.”

Nokia has been talking about this for a while now (I remember sitting down at dinner with Kring last year) and it looks like the game/experience is ready to go. The concept is a bit difficult to describe but could be a game changer – the audience will use their Nokia phones in various locations to interact with other members. This will include interactive theater, alternate reality gaming, music, physical participation and more.

“I believe that storytelling has the power to create positive change in the world. Audiences today want to be more involved in stories,” said Kring, in a prepared statement. “Our goal with the Conspiracy For Good is to entice, engage, and inspire the audience to drive real-world change through their participation in a narrative.”

I’m actually really stoked about this offering from Nokia. Some of you may remember the guerilla marketing campaign for “The Dark Knight” movie, as it was filled with various real-life adventures to get people excited about the film. If you combine that type of creativity with the power and Internet capabilities of a modern smartphone, we could be in store for something special.

This is the first major mobile adventure push we’ve seen from a major player and I can’t wait to see how it turns out. You can read more about the back story and how to participate at Nokia’s website.

This could just be the first step into a future full of really cool augmented reality games. It makes sense too, as most modern smartphones are about as powerful as a PlayStation 2 but can layer on important things like location, the mobile Internet and picture-taking functionality.

The future of mobile gaming looks bright, guys like Nintendo should be worried.
