Nokia is out with a new cool service called Nokia Mobile Communities. Designed for their S40 feature phone users, the Java-based application is made to bring social networking to the folks who don’t have data connection in India and other emerging markets. SMS is the sole bearer of communication for the service to reduce cost to the user.
The product has two main flavors – Conversations and Streams. The former is ideal for short group chats with your social network, whereas the latter helps create channels for community building and following a topic or a person.
At the moment, the Finnish company is trialing Nokia Mobile Communities in India. Although the client application works on any device that can ran Java, it is optimized for phones with QVGA displays.
As you can see from the screenshots above, the UI isn’t exactly modern, but bare in mind it works on phones that cost about $50 or maybe even less… You can grab Nokia Mobile Communities from here.
